Plan A Gift: IRA / Retirement Account IRA / Retirement Account

MAKE AN END OF LIFE TAX-FREE GIFT

A tax-deferred retirement savings plan like an IRA, 401(k), 403(b), SEP-IRA, SIMPLE IRA, or tax-sheltered annuity allows your money to grow tax-free. The tax is paid when the money is withdrawn during your retirement years and then any remaining funds at your death.

Fortunately, this tax does not apply when transferring the funds to your surviving spouse at the end of your life. However, transfers to your children or anyone else become taxable. Today the tax rate can be as high as 39.6% plus state tax. This is a very expensive asset to give to family.

On the other hand, an IRA or other retirement account makes a great gift to Samaritan's Purse.

Add Samaritan's Purse as the contingent beneficiary, after your spouse, of your retirement account. Upon the death of both you and your spouse, the remaining funds would be available to Samarian's Purse to fulfill your intention to help people and share the Gospel with those in need. Since Samaritan's Purse is a charity, the funds are not taxed and the entire amount is put to use in ministry. Other assets within your estate can be transferred to family without this heavy loss to taxes.

If you have further questions about leaving your IRA as part of your legacy to Samaritan's Purse, please contact our legacy planning team at stewardship@samaritan.org or 800-528-1980 for confidential personal assistance.

A RETAINED LIFE ESTATE

Perhaps you like the tax advantages a gift of real estate to Samaritan's Purse would offer, but you want to continue living in your personal residence for your lifetime. You can transfer your personal residence or your farm to Samaritan's Purse but keep the right to occupy it for the rest of your life.

You would continue to pay property taxes and the expenses to maintain and insure the property. Samaritan's Purse would not actually take possession of the residence until after your lifetime. Since this gift cannot be revoked, you receive an immediate charitable tax deduction for a portion of your home's value.

There is no capital gain tax to pay on your property now or later and at the end of your life this gift will not go through probate.

If you would like to discuss a gift of real estate or a retained life estate, please contact our legacy planning team at stewardship@samaritan.org or 800-528-1980.

Plan A Gift:  Real Estate Gifts  Charitable Remainder Trust

CONVERTING ASSETS INTO INCOME AND A SIGNIFICANT CHARITABLE GIFT

Appreciated assets such as stocks, mutual funds, and real estate held for at least one year provide superior tax benefits when given to Samaritan's Purse. The donor receives a charitable tax deduction for the gift, and also avoids tax on the long-term capital gain.

Often people are interested in making that type of charitable gift, but anticipate a need for additional income. One solution to consider is a Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT).

A CRT is created and a Trustee is named. The assets (stock, mutual funds, real estate, etc.) are transferred by the donor to the CRT. A charitable tax deduction is immediately available for a significant portion of the asset value. The assets are sold tax-free by the CRT and reinvested to generate income. Any capital gain attributed to the assets is not recognized within the CRT. Income is paid to the donor for lifetime or for a term of years. When income payments cease, the remaining value of the CRT is distributed to Samaritan's Purse to fulfill the legacy plan of the donor and help hurting people in the name of Jesus.

There are many variations of Charitable Remainder Trusts, and determining the best type for each situation requires expertise. Our legacy planning team can assist you and your professional advisors throughout the process.

If you would like to discuss a gift of real estate or a retained life estate, please contact our legacy planning team at stewardship@samaritan.org or 800-528-1980.

SAMARITAN’S PURSE CELEBRATES 11 MILLION+ SHOEBOX GIFTS COLLECTED FOR CHILDREN IN NEED

BOONE, N.C., Feb. 16, 2018 — Because of the generosity of donors across the United States, Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, collected more than 8.8 million shoeboxes in 2017. Packed with fun toys, school supplies and hygiene items, these gifts bring joy and the eternal hope of the Gospel to children around the world.

“It’s incredible to see the difference a simple shoebox gift can make in the life of a child. They bring the message of unconditional love and forgiveness found only in Jesus Christ,” said Franklin Graham, president of Samaritan’s Purse. “After 25 years, there’s still nothing like seeing how one gift can impact the eternal destiny of a child.”

Combined with those collected from partnering countries in 2017, the ministry is now sending more than 11 million shoebox gifts to children suffering from poverty, natural disasters, war, disease and famine.

Many children who receive shoebox gifts will also enroll in Operation Christmas Child’s 12-lesson discipleship program, The Greatest Journey. This program teaches children about God’s amazing love and guides them through what it means to faithfully follow Jesus Christ. Since 2010, more than 14 million children have participated in the program. Every child who graduates is given a New Testament in their own language.

Although local drop-off locations for gifts are closed until November 2018, anyone can still be a part of this life changing project by conveniently packing a shoebox gift online at samaritanspurse.org/buildonline. Participants can also challenge others to pack boxes online with them or use a shoebox gift card to share the opportunity with friends and family.

Samaritan’s Purse is an international Christian relief and evangelism organization headed by Franklin Graham. Since 1993, more than 157 million Operation Christmas Child gift-filled shoeboxes have been distributed to children in more than 160 countries and territories. N.C.-Based Organization's Disaster Response Specialists and Equipment Will Provide Emergency Relief for Storm Victims

BOONE, N.C., March 20, 2018— International Christian relief organization Samaritan's Purse deployed disaster response specialists and two tractor-trailers filled with relief supplies to northern Alabama—an area devastated by widespread storms. Teams are arriving today to start assessing the greatest areas of need.

Stocked with emergency supplies and tools, one Disaster Relief Unit will be based in Gadsden, Alabama at Southside Baptist Church. The second unit will standby in Oxford, Alabama as the team monitors storm damage reports. These units will serve as a base of operation for staff and volunteers helping tornado victims recover.

“Last night's storms caused significant damage in Alabama with multiple tornados touching down,” said Franklin Graham, president of Samaritan's Purse. “As search and rescue efforts continue, our teams are on the way so that as soon as the area opens up we can be there to help the community get back on their feet. We want to provide physical assistance while also reminding families that God loves them and they are not alone.”

Samaritan's Purse will mobilize volunteers from across the country to help families start to pick up the pieces and recover from the storm. Volunteers will clear debris, remove downed trees, tarp roofs and salvage homeowner's personal belongings.

MEDIA OPPORTUNITIES Bruce Poss, program manager of U.S. Disaster Relief for Samaritan's Purse, coordinating the response Tim Haas, manager of U.S. Disaster Relief for Samaritan's Purse (assessing damage in Alabama) Randy Corn, program manager of U.S. Disaster Relief for Samaritan's Purse (assessing damage in Alabama)

Clinic La Fuente Centro de Salud Integral – Cusco, Peru <!--Mission: Operated by New Covenant World Missions, located in Canton, Ohio.--> Requirements: Intermediate Spanish or better required. Fluent Spanish required for Medical Students. Mission Statement: The vision of La Fuente is three-fold: 1) Offer excellent, Christ-centered healthcare that emphasizes sharing the Gospel with patients. 2) Evangelize and disciple Peruvian healthcare students in the clinical context in order to produce healthcare providers that will see their profession as a means to grow God's kingdom in Peru as they heal in Jesus' Name. 3) Leverage our clinic as a leader in social justice and health, thereby challenging others in authority to fulfill the mandate of loving our neighbor as we seek to grow God’s kingdom in our city. Profile: La Fuente Centro de Salud Integral is a Christian non-profit healthcare clinic located in the city of Cusco, Peru. We offer services in the areas of ophthalmology, optometry, dentistry, adult medicine, women's health, pediatrics, psychology, physical therapy, clinical laboratory, and pharmacy. In 2015 our staff saw over 15,000 patients. La Fuente is staffed by Peruvian nationals as well as international volunteers. We share a love for Christ, an awareness of His inexhaustible grace for us, and a passion for seeing the city of Cusco and its surrounding areas redeemed for the glory of God. Time Difference: Same as EST. Travel: Fly by commercial airline to Lima, Peru. Depending on arrival time, it might be necessary to spend the night in Lima. From Lima you will take a one-hour flight to Cusco. Upon arrival, you will travel by ground transportation to your place of lodging. Location: La Fuente is located approximately 680 miles south east of Lima. The altitude is 11,200 feet near the Urubamba Valley of the Andes mountain range, located on the eastern end of the Knot of Cusco. People: Peruvian culture is warm and “touchy-feely”. Greeting is done with a cheek kiss or a handshake (between males). Each individual greets and is greeted, with noticeably less personal space. Sharing is a sign of friendship and refusal of anything offered is considered impolite. The culture is also very communal. Punctuality is not a Peruvian value, although professionals understand the expectation. Language: Most patients speak Spanish, although some prefer Quechua (an indigenous language derived from the ancestral language). Because of the missionary community in the area, there are occasionally English-speaking patients. The Peruvian staff can help translate between Spanish and Quechua. Religion: The national religion of Peru is Catholicism with more than 90% of the population identifying as Catholic. There is a strong element of syncretism – the mixing of Andean beliefs with Catholicism. Among the university population there is a current of post-modernism that is observable. Climate: High temperatures range from low 70s to low 80s year round. Temperatures can drop below freezing from May through July. There is a distinct rainy season which usually begins in November and continues until the beginning of April. April through October is generally very dry. Housing: Housing will be in either local hotels or missionary guest housing. All options include private bedroom and bath, with some hotels adding breakfast. The guesthouse includes a shared living/kitchen area and maid service. A mini apartment is available, including kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and living room. Lodging will be confirmed prior to departure. Food: Be prepared to make your own meals, buy your own food, etc. Meals are not provided at the clinic. There are several family-owned restaurants near the clinic where you can buy lunch rather cheaply and finer restaurants in the city center. Grocery stores are common and prices considerably cheaper for staple foods, such as rice, pasta, tuna, colas, oil, flour, etc. Most meats are available in grocery stores for reasonable prices. U.S./imported items will cost more than at home. Fruits and vegetables are available in outdoor markets, but they must be cleaned thoroughly by soaking in bleach water mixture before consumption.

Jungle Hospital – Dyer Rural Hospital

Jungle Hospital - Dyer Rural Hospital – Rio Viejo, Atlantida, Honduras Mission: Healing Hands Global, Inc. is located in Baton Rouge, LA. The ministry is Jungle Hospital in Rio Viejo, Honduras. Vision: The vision of HHG is to bring health, hope, and healing to the people of the third world, by developing a comprehensive model for healthcare in rural areas. Specialty Needs: DDS, EM, FM, PEDS, RN Requirements: Intermediate to fluent Spanish preferred – 2 weeks minimum service. Will accept residents in last year and medical students – 1 month minimum service and fluent Spanish preferred. Currently unable to accommodate volunteers bringing larger families; only parents with one or two children at this time. Expansions are in the planning phase. Profile: The Williams family has been serving in Honduras since 1994. Their formative years in ministry were under the mentorship of Jack and Shirley Dyer near the northern coastal city of La Ceiba. During the first four years, they assisted the Dyers in operating their dairy farm, which served as a means of training and discipling the local people, as well as providing a source of income and nourishment. They hosted short-term missions groups – building churches, parsonages, and educational buildings in the surrounding villages – and used their experience in children’s ministry to train puppet teams, beginning children’s ministries in the local churches. It was during those years that they familiarized themselves with the culture and people of Northern Honduras, realizing their needs and the vision that God had given the Dyers decades before: to build a hospital and serve the nearly 20,000 people in the mountains surrounding Rio Viejo. In 1999, the Williams family moved to the capital city of Tegucigalpa for Martin to attend medical school. He received his degree in medicine after 5 years of study in 2005, and the family returned to La Ceiba, where Dr. Martin served his year of internship in the government-operated Hospital Atlantida. In 2006, Wendy Williams finished a six-year teaching tenure in various bilingual schools. Thus she and the children finally moved to Rio Viejo to establish themselves in the clinic and set up a home base, while Dr. Martin attended his year of social commitment in the distant village of Las Minas. After completing his service later that November, they set out to fulfill the requirements for the hospital. In November 2007, Dyer Rural Hospital of Rio Viejo (Jungle Hospital) was officially inaugurated. In 2015, the hospital became certified as a Level II hospital. In February 2016, they dedicated the Labor and Delivery Ward, as well as the Surgical and Recovery Wards. They have served over 35,000 patient consults at the hospital and the surrounding community. Time Difference: 2 Hours Daylight Savings Time (EST), U.S.A., -1 Hour Eastern Standard Time. We are in the Central Time Zone, but do not practice daylight savings time. Location: Dyer Rural Hospital (Jungle Hospital) is located in Rio Viejo, Honduras, approximately 20 km (12 miles) from the coastal city of La Ceiba. The drive is approximately 1 hour along a rural dirt road. Language: Although 95% of the population is considered Roman Catholic, it is extremely unlikely that most of these will have read or heard even the most basic precepts of the faith. Culture: Heavy tattoos and/or piercings are not acceptable in the local culture. Volunteers with tattoos must be able to cover them completely and all piercings (outside of earrings on women) should be removed during service time. Climate: Honduras is very hot and humid. A light jacket should be taken for evenings and in the higher elevations. Housing: Volunteers are lodged in G-Flat Volunteer Housing. G-Flats contain four apartments that are located behind the hospital, within the same gated perimeter. Each apartment has its own bathroom, kitchen, and small living area. Outside the building is a laundry facility with two washing machines and two dryers. These are shared by the volunteers who are staying in the four apartments. Volunteers are responsible to take care of their own laundry. Teams serving for one week at Jungle Hospital are lodged in a dormitory on campus. The first floor of the dorm has two bunk rooms; one for the ladies and the other for the men. There is also a dining room and a kitchen that is accessible to anyone staying in the dorm. There are three guest rooms located on the second floor of the dorm, along with a large enclosed porch area and a laundry facility. This laundry facility is only available to the second-floor guests, and not for the first-floor team members. Currently, the only areas of the campus that have AC are the Pharmacy and the medical storage facility. Each of the housing areas has ceiling fans, a small floor fan, and lower bunk bed fans. Linens are provided for all the housing areas. Food: For volunteers serving up to one month, meals are included in pricing for room and board. For volunteers serving for longer than one month, meals are not provided. Volunteers will purchase groceries and prepare their own meals. The cost of groceries is estimated at approximately $50 per adult per week.

Shalom Family Medical Center – Santiago Texacuangos, El Salvador Mission: Operated by Harvesting In Spanish Vision: To reach people for Christ and to provide training, resources, and opportunities to serve Him. Through the Shalom Family Medical Clinic, we care for people’s physical needs in Jesus’ Name, while providing training and service opportunities for Christian medical and dental students and professionals. Specialty Needs: DDS, EM, FM/IM, RN, OBG, PEDS Requirements: 2 week minimum service time. Intermediate to fluent Spanish preferred, but translators available for hire. Will accept medical students and residents. Profile: Harvesting in Spanish (HIS) was founded in 1977 in the country of El Salvador by Don and Rose Ann Benner. Don left his executive position at an international corporation. The Benners sold their home, furniture, and vehicles and moved their two children to Costa Rica for a year of language school before being invited to El Salvador to begin a literature ministry - distributing Bibles, Christian books, and Sunday School materials during the time of crisis in the country in the late 1970s. Since that time, HIS has expanded into three Joshua Christian bookstores, Shalom Children’s Home and school, Oasis Children’s Feeding Ministry, Living Stones Church, and the Shalom Family Medical Clinic. HIS is an independent, non-profit, interdenominational evangelical mission committed to advancing the Gospel in El Salvador through literature distribution, healthcare, and the investment in young lives by instilling Christian values and hope for a brighter future. The expectation is that these young people will be the agents of change for their nation as they grow up. Shalom Family Medical Center has six general exam rooms for pediatric and general care, a gyno-obstetric exam room with ultrasound, two dental chairs, an X-ray room, basic pharmacy, clinical laboratory, two trauma/emergency bays, administrative offices, staff lounge, two classrooms, chapel and offices for a psychologist and a social worker, staff kitchen, and regular and handicapped bathrooms on each floor. The next phase of development of the building will allow the center to have an out-patient operating room, patient recovery room, and physical therapy area. Time Difference: 1 Hour (EST) March through November; -2 Hours (EST) November through March Location: Shalom Family Medical Center is located in Santiago Texacuangos, approximately 10 miles southeast of the international airport in Sal Salvador. The airport is located at sea level on the coast, and the hospital is approximately 1,700 feet above sea level. Language: Spanish is the official language and is spoken by virtually all inhabitants. Some indigenous people speak their native tongues, but indigenous Salvadorans who do not identify as mestizo constitute only 1% of the country’s population. However, all of them can speak Spanish. Spanish is preferred by the hospital, but the degree of knowledge needed depends greatly on the role you will be serving in. Translators are available for hire by volunteers for a fee of $15 per day. This will need to be arranged prior to your departure, so please inform your Placement and/or Logistics Coordinator if you will require this service. Religion: The majority of the population in El Salvador is Christian. Roman Catholics (47%) and Protestants (33%) are the two major denominations in the country. Those not affiliated with any religious group amount to about 17% of the population. The remaining 3% is made up of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Hare Krishnas, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, Latter-day Saints, and those adhering to indigenous religious beliefs. The number of evangelicals in the country is growing rapidly. Climate: El Salvador has a tropical climate with pronounced wet and dry seasons. Temperatures vary primarily with elevation and show little seasonal change, with the average temperature in Santiago Texacuangos averaging around 85 degrees Fahrenheit. The rainy season (May through November) is considered the winter, and almost all of the annual rainfall occurs during this period. During this time it rains primarily in the late afternoon and at night, although there are exceptions. December through April are the summer months and the northeast trade winds control the weather patterns. During these months, by the time the air flowing from the Caribbean reaches El Salvador, it is dry, hot, and hazy. This excludes the northern higher mountain ranges, where temperatures will remain cool. Housing: All volunteers are housed in apartments at the Shalom Children’s Home. If you would like an apartment with a kitchen in order to prepare your own meals, please notify your Logistics Coordinator so that proper inquiries/arrangements can be made. If the apartment is available during your stay, it will be reserved for you. Volunteers will need to bring bath towels and/or wash cloths for their use. Some bed linens are provided – you will be notified prior to your departure if you must bring your own. Mosquito nets are not kept in the apartments, but most bedrooms are equipped with AC, and all have fans. There is a swimming pool and basketball court on the campus, and a net can be set up on the basketball court for volleyball if desired. Food: Meals are provided at the Children’s Home, the cost of which is included in the daily rate. Specific desired foods can be brought from home or some may be found at the nearby grocery store, including soy and almond milk, as well as some gluten-free products. Food costs are approximately the same as what you would pay in the United States. Laundry: Washers and dryers are available for use to wash laundry when needed. Detergent is not provided. Please make sure to use only the specified machines for volunteers.

Strengthening Military Marriages A New Summer of Healing for Military Marriages

OUR SIXTH SEASON: 16 WEEKS, 160 MORE COUPLES. PLEASE PRAY.

Share Tweet Pin Emaily Subscribe

Memorial Day weekend marked the start of a new Operation Heal Our Patriots season as we welcomed our first group of military couples to Alaska for a week of Biblically based marriage enrichment. The 2017 summer season began May 28 and ran to September 16.

Through our photo feed below you can see updates that came in throughout the 2017 season.

We invite you to read stories from 2017 of combat-wounded service members and their spouses who have experienced God's healing love for themselves and their marriages.

LATEST STORIES: Salvation, Marriage Renewal are Answered Prayers in Alaska God Carried this Army Couple Through Cancer and InjuryMarine Couple Leaves Alaska Stronger After Marriage Enrichment Week Salvation in Christ Changes the Lives of Military Couples

These couples (typically 10 per week) are flown to our wilderness lodge in Alaska where they participate in marriage classes, enjoy daily devotions from God's Word, and are offered confidential Christ-focused counseling with our retired military chaplains. They also have opportunities for physical refreshment by participating together in activities such as kayaking, hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing.

“For real, long-term healing, wounded service members need a sound foundation," says retired Marine Brigadier General Jim Walker, who serves as the project's executive director. "That foundation has two parts: a strong marriage and a strong faith in Christ. That’s it. That’s the whole program. That’s what we’re doing in Alaska.”

Samaritan’s Purse started Operation Heal Our Patriots in 2012 to strengthen the marriages of military personnel wounded in combat or combat-related activities after 9/11. Over the past five years, our staff has welcomed more than 700 couples to Alaska to participate in the project. We praise God that so far nearly 300 individuals have made commitments to Jesus Christ, and more than 320 couples have publicly rededicated their marriages to the Lord during their stay at Samaritan Lodge. (And the numbers continue to increase week-by-week during the summer.)

Our ministry to these couples does not end in Alaska as we follow up with them over the long term through our aftercare program. Our staff connects couples with local churches, engages families through regular personal contact (phone calls, emails, social media, visits), and meets with them at regional get-togethers. In addition, Operation Heal Our Patriots reunions and regional training events benefit couples by providing more Christian teaching and tools to fortify their marriage. Many of the participants have also developed deep relationships with one another and support each other directly in a variety of ways.

Please continue praying for our staff and the couples they ministered to in 2017.

NC-Based Christian Relief Organization Airlifts Supplies and Disaster Specialists to Hawaiian Communities Devastated By Flooding

BOONE, N.C., May 1, 2018— April's historic rainfall on the Hawaiian island of Kauai inundated local communities—destroying homes, washing out roads and isolating families from the rest of the island. On Wednesday, Samaritan's Purse will send personnel and supplies to Hawaii to help residents in hard-to-reach communities recover from the flooding. Supplies include heavy-duty plastic tarp, generators, chainsaws and other relief equipment.

After Hawaii's U.S. Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard informed Samaritan's Purse president Franklin Graham of the devastation in Kauai, he traveled to the area to see the needs firsthand and determine how the organization could help.

“I've seen the tremendous amount of damage that families in Kauai are facing after torrential rain flooded hundreds of homes, triggered mudslides and washed out roads,” said Graham. “We are here to share the love of Jesus Christ with families in need by helping them physically recover and reminding them that they are not alone.”

On Wednesday, May 2, Samaritan's Purse will airlift supplies on the organization's DC-8 cargo plane, departing Greensboro, North Carolina, at 8 a.m. The plane will land later that afternoon in Lihue on the island of Kauai. From there supplies will be transferred to trucks and then all-terrain vehicles to reach hard-hit, remote communities still inaccessible by road.

Samaritan's Purse, partnering with local churches, will mobilize volunteer teams to mud out flooded homes, remove debris and tarp roofs.

Graham is also president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, and chaplains from the ministry's Rapid Response Team will work alongside Samaritan's Purse and the volunteers to provide emotional and spiritual encouragement.

Plan Includes Fixing Churches and Homes and Bringing a New Power Source to One Hard-Hit Community

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO, May 29, 2018— As hurricane season approaches people across Puerto Rico are still reeling from last year’s devastating storms—Irma and Maria. That’s why international Christian relief organization Samaritan’s Purse is announcing a multi-year recovery plan aimed at rehabilitating more than 390 homes and 55 churches in central and southern Puerto Rico.

“It’s important for people in Puerto Rico to know they are not forgotten, and that God loves them,” said Samaritan’s Purse President Franklin Graham. “We have been on the ground in Puerto Rico since the day Hurricane Maria hit, and we will continue to help them rebuild their lives.”

The organization also plans a much-needed solar energy project for 100 homes in Yabucoa, one of the hardest-hit areas on the island, where residents continue to be affected by intermittent power outages.

Teams will begin installing the solar units this summer. The solar project is the first of its kind for the relief group. The time-intensive installation process will provide enough electricity for a small home, including enough to power a refrigerator, which is critically important when electricity isn’t available because it allows residents to keep crucial prescription medications and temperature-sensitive food items from spoiling.

MEDIA OPPORTUNITIES AND RESOURCES Remote or in-person interviews with disaster relief specialists in Puerto Rico Yabucoa: solar energy project installation Central and Southern Puerto Rico: rebuilding efforts with local churches and homes   PUERTO RICO STATISTICS – Samaritan’s Purse Post-Maria Aid 1,900+ generator kits 75,000 tarps, helping households stay dry until permanent repairs can be made 34,000 grocery boxes, in partnership with the Federal Emergency Management Agency 6,000+ solar lamps 24,000 Sawyer water filters Tens of thousands of buckets and jerry cans used to transport water 1,540 Bibles 3,100 people served by 67 free mobile medical clinics 756 helicopter trips to deliver tons of food, supplies and staff to remote or inaccessible areas

In addition to 1,900 generator kits already distributed across the island, Samaritan’s Purse in April shipped another 500 generator kits, which include a generator, oil, a gas can and solar lights. The kits are being distributed to vulnerable families in remote areas of central Puerto Rico that still do not have access to power.

BACKGROUND: CARIBBEAN-WIDE RESPONSE CONTINUES

Samaritan’s Purse first deployed teams of disaster response specialists across a number of Caribbean islands in the immediate aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Maria to provide medical help and distribute food, emergency shelter materials, clean water, hygiene kits and solar lights to families in need.

Over the subsequent weeks and months, the organization’s DC-8 cargo jet made 44 round trips from North Carolina to the Caribbean, airlifting more than 1,000 tons of emergency relief supplies and key staff. With the conclusion of the emergency response phase, the organization is now shipping additional supplies on barges, with more than 2,000 tons of aid shipped by air and sea to the Caribbean so far. Many supplies have also been sourced locally.

In addition to distributing relief supplies, the organization established 16 clean water points throughout the Caribbean that provided ongoing sources of clean water.

Barbuda

More than 53 homes have been repaired, with another 112 targeted for completion by the end of the year. Samaritan’s Purse staff have completed repairs to one church and will work on five other churches that were significantly damaged. The organization also installed a reverse-osmosis plant that continues to provide safe water for families as they move back to the island.

Dominica

Samaritan’s Purse staff plan to assist with an estimated 1,000 roof repairs. Over the next two to three years, the organization also plans to help rebuild some 30 churches and provide reconstruction support to approximately 825 people through home repair efforts. Samaritan’s Purse, in partnership with the local utility, continues to truck clean water to communities in need.

St. Martin

Samaritan’s Purse, the first relief organization to arrive after the hurricane with food, water and heavy-duty shelter materials, plans to repair 40 churches, restore 315 homes and provide 2,500 families with material assistance vouchers to purchase large appliances, lumber, windows, roofing supplies or other construction materials.

About Samaritan’s Purse

Following Hurricanes Irma and Maria, Samaritan's Purse has helped more than 94,900 families in the Caribbean, which included disaster response efforts in Turks and Caicos, St. Martin, Puerto Rico, Dominica, and Antigua and Barbuda. Samaritan’s Purse also helped more than 3,800 families impacted by the hurricanes in Texas and Florida.
