Steven Curtis Chapman’s New Song Benefits Hurricane Relief
"My father and I have a long history of partnering for the Gospel with Steven Curtis Chapman. I'm grateful to God for his desire to help victims of Harvey and Irma through Samaritan's Purse. His song encourages all of us to place our faith and hope in God as we weather the storms of life."—Franklin Graham
Hi Everybody,
It is a privilege to partner with my friends at Samaritan’s Purse as we love on and encourage those affected by Hurricane Harvey and now Hurricane Irma.
After seeing the devastation that hit Houston and the surrounding areas, I sat down with my friends Lori McKenna and Barry Dean to write what was on my heart, and to respond the best way I know how: with a song. As my family and I have experienced in our own seasons of devastation and loss, sometimes what we need most is someone to just "be with us" in the darkness, and remind us, maybe even sing to us, that the sun will shine again and the blue will return to our sky…that’s what we hoped to capture with this song.
I reached out to one of my favorite singers on the planet, my friend Gary LeVox from Rascal Flatts, and asked him if he might join me on this recording of 'Til The Blue…and he said "yes"! We hope this song will encourage those in Texas and Florida, as well as the many that have given, volunteered, and prayed for those affected by hurricanes Harvey and Irma.
I’ve always appreciated and trusted the great work that Samaritan’s Purse does and am grateful that this song could be used to direct people to an organization that is once again doing the important and vital work of offering hope and help to those who have suffered great loss.
So with this hope I offer this song to encourage many who might need to be reminded that they are being thought of, prayed for, and reached out to, "until the blue returns to their sky."
Blessings,
Samaritan's Purse has teams on the ground helping people in Jesus' Name in Texas, Florida, and the Caribbean. Hurricanes Harvey and Irma did incredible damage, but our staff and volunteers are bringing hope to the hurting—whether by mudding out flooded homes, tarping a roof, or delivering food to the hungry. The quality of our work is our platform, and the Good News of the Lord Jesus Christ is our message.

--> Share Tweet Pin Emaily SubscribeSamaritan's Purse responds to the urgent needs of families devastated by the wind, rain, and storm surge of catastrophic hurricanes. Whether in the United States or abroad, we come alongside hurting people to bring emergency relief and practical help in the Name of Jesus Christ.
In the United States, we send disaster relief units—tractor trailers stocked with equipment and supplies—to hard-hit areas where we set up volunteer centers in partnership with local churches. Our staff and volunteer teams then work to assist hurting homeowners by cutting trees, tarping roofs, and performing mud-outs. As we work, we boldly present the hope of the Gospel. Right now we have established five response bases in Texas and four in Florida to aid people affected by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.
When major hurricanes hit international locations, we deploy a disaster assistance response team (DART) to quickly bring in a variety of emergency supplies. We also leverage our Samaritan's Purse aircraft, including our DC-8 cargo plane, to assist. Today we are working to help people on several devastated islands of the Caribbean, including Puerto Rico, Dominica, St. Martin, Antigua, Barbuda, and Turks and Caicos. We have already airlifted generators, food, water purification units, hygiene kits, and heavy-duty shelter plastic for thousands of families. Our distributions are ongoing. As we minister in the wake of Hurricanes Irma, Jose, and Maria, we share the Good News of Jesus Christ alongside local church partners.
Please continue to pray for all those affected by this historic 2017 hurricane season, which has brought so much pain and suffering to so many.

Samaritan’s Purse Provides Life-Saving Aid to Thousands in Puerto Rico, Dominica and Barbuda (Press Release)
SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO, Oct. 9, 2017— Samaritan's Purse, an international Christian relief organization, deployed teams of disaster respo nse specialists to the Caribbean in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma and Maria. Now approximately 60 team members continue to distribute food, emergency shelter materials, clean water, hygiene kits and solar lights to families in need. Medical personnel are also supporting the local hospital in Dominica.
Samaritan's Purse President Franklin Graham was on the ground in Puerto Rico last week to assess the damage, meet with local pastors and encourage residents as they begin to recover from the storm.
"These hurricanes destroyed everything in their path and left thousands desperate for help," Graham said. "We are putting relief supplies—heavy-duty tarp, hygiene kits, solar lights and food—in the hands of families in need. We want to remind people who are suffering that God loves them by meeting their needs for emergency shelter and other critical supplies. We will be working in the Caribbean for months to come."
Already, the organization's DC-8 cargo jet has made 17 round trips from North Carolina to the Caribbean, airlifting more than 395 tons of emergency relief supplies and key staff. More cargo flights are scheduled in the coming days. The Samaritan's Purse helicopter arrived in Puerto Rico last weekend. Using this resource, disaster response specialists have delivered food parcels to isolated, mountainous communities and continue to canvas areas inaccessible by road.
In addition to distributing relief supplies, the North Carolina-based organization has established nine clean water points throughout the Caribbean and is working to identify additional locations. Many of these are reverse osmosis systems that convert sea water to fresh water. Each unit provides an ongoing source of clean water, which is a desperate need throughout the region.

BOONE, N.C., Sept. 12, 2017— Samaritan’s Purse disaster response teams are helping thousands of families devastated by Hurricane Irma in the Caribbean and on the coast of Florida. The North Carolina-based organization is airlifting emergency supplies to storm-ravaged Caribbean islands, and two disaster relief units are on the way to Southwest Florida to provide aid to families reeling from the storm.
More than two dozen disaster response specialists are distributing emergency supplies to some 4,000 families in the Caribbean, including emergency shelter materials, water purification units, food, blankets and hygiene kits. The organization’s DC-8 cargo plane has already transported more than 40 tons of aid and will continue to deliver critical supplies to islands in need.
Samaritan’s Purse is also responding to help families devastated by the storm in Southwest Florida. Two Disaster Relief Units, stocked with chainsaws, generators and tools, will serve as command centers to help affected families. Teams of volunteers will help homeowners recover by tearing out damaged drywall, removing flooring, tarping roofs and clearing debris.
"Hurricane Irma leveled islands in the Caribbean and devastated the Florida coast," said Franklin Graham, president of Samaritan’s Purse. "We are taking critically needed supplies to storm survivors and coming alongside affected families. We want to meet their physical needs while showing them the love of Jesus Christ. Please pray for all those affected by this horrific storm."

BOONE, N.C., Nov. 1, 2017 — This month, nearly 5,000 U.S. locations will serve as drop-off sites for the Samaritan’s Purse project, Operation Christmas Child—collecting gift-filled shoeboxes for children in need around the world.
During the project’s National Collection Week, Nov. 13 – 20, anyone can transform empty shoeboxes into gifts of hope filled with school supplies, hygiene items and fun toys. “The shoebox gifts donated throughout the country at these drop-off locations will shine a light of hope to children living in poverty overseas,” said Randy Riddle, senior director of Operation Christmas Child in the United States. “Anyone is welcome to pack a shoebox and help a child facing difficult circumstances to feel loved and not forgotten.”

-->Year-round Volunteer: Missouri Volunteer Motivated by Jesus’ Last Words
Jill Cobb of Mountain View, Missouri, does what she does because she's focused on Christ’s final words on earth, which begin: “Go and make disciples of all the nations” (Matthew 28:19, NKJV).
She volunteers as an area coordinator for Operation Christmas Child and consistently mentors her team of 55 people to stay focused on why they serve. The group’s goal is to “mobilize people and multiply shoebox gifts” and their motivation must remain reaching children with the Gospel.
Jill wants to filter everything her team does through this priority. “There’s so much to do. It’s easy to focus on details instead of realizing why I’m doing it—for Jesus and the Great Commission,” Jill said.
Jill (center, in red) prays with a group of students over the shoebox gifts they packed. “My passion is evangelism and the desire to see one more person come to Jesus.” Jill Cobb AREA COORDINATORThis big-picture perspective is impacting the results of their efforts. In 2016, the official shoebox collection goal for the 18 counties in their area was 38,000.
“We prayed that we’d be able to describe that year in two words: only God,” Jill said. The Lord then surprised them with a total of 41,359 shoebox gifts! Some churches in their area actually collected twice their goal amount.
In 2017 their collection totaled 43,816. The group gives God the glory that each one of these boxes—each of these Gospel opportunities—will bless children, their families, and their communities.
Jill isn’t involved because of the numbers. She volunteers with Operation Christmas Child because “my passion is evangelism and the desire to see one more person come to Jesus.”
Secondarily, she serves in order to model Christ’s heart to her children, ages 10 and 7. Jill wants to teach them to be “on mission” at an early age. “To see their hearts grow for children around the world to come to Jesus has challenged me to go deeper in my faith, too,” Jill said.
God Uses People to Accomplish His PurposesA former mentor of Jill’s, Winnie Tuckness, serves as a regional area coordinator overseeing three Operation Christmas Child area teams. A few years ago, as Winnie drove US Highway 60 from Springfield to Nashville, Tennessee, she noticed First Baptist Church in Mountain View, Missouri, and thought it would be a good place for a shoebox drop-off location. When she noticed Matt Cobb was the pastor, she wondered if this could be Jill’s husband. She hadn’t had contact with the couple for 10 years.
Jill shows her enthusiasm for Operation Christmas Child.Calling the church, she discovered it was in fact the same Matt and Jill Cobb whom she'd known years ago. This led to a reunion with the couple, and Winnie asked Jill if she would be interested in volunteering with Operation Christmas Child. She served in logistics first, and in 2016 became the area coordinator for the Springfield, Missouri Area Team.
During her interview for that position, Jill was reminded of a vision she’d had 10 years earlier of 1 billion people being saved during her lifetime. She shed tears of joy when she realized that, through Operation Christmas Child, she could have a small part in this becoming a reality.
“Jill is a gifted leader with such a passion and spiritual maturity,” Winnie said. “It’s exciting to see how God is using her.”
Jill quickly added, “I’m thankful God chooses to use us. It’s not that we’re amazing—through His grace and mercy He uses us.”

Diane Calvert, administrative support volunteer at the West Coast Regional Office, does paperwork, filing, and data entry for Operation Christmas Child. She said “I do anything from A to Z” to support the staff.
Retired, Diane spends an average of two days a week volunteering with the Samaritan’s Purse project, but three to four days a week in November and December during shoebox processing season. This grandmother spent her career working in accounting and payroll offices and is delighted to transfer some of her skills to Kingdom ministry. “God uses what you have,” Diane said.
Diane Calvert stays busy volunteering at the West Coast Regional Office. She enjoys interaction with her Operation Christmas Child colleagues daily and said, “Filling a box for one child does not just reach a child, it reaches a village or a community or a family that is in desperate need and shows them the love of Jesus. It makes such a dent in a hardcore life. It can mean the difference between life and death.”
To those considering volunteering with Operation Christmas Child, Diane said, “Pray about it because you want to know it’s where God wants you. When you feel it’s right, plunge in to everything you can because every little bit counts.”

Jill first volunteered at the Minneapolis Processing Center with her youth group growing up. Later, when she got involved in politics, she appreciated the positive environment of the organization.

“We prayed that we’d be able to describe that year in two words: only God,” Jill said. The Lord then surprised them with a total of 41,359 shoebox gifts! Some churches in their area actually collected twice their goal amount.
The uplifting nature of the project balances the negativity she faces on any given workday.
“Every day I do some work with Operation Christmas Child, I feel like I’m making a difference," Jill said. "I really love that it shares the Word of God. It’s so heartwarming and so positive. We have an opportunity every day to make the world a better place and to invite people to let God in their hearts.

<!-- sub-head or second headline below God Uses People to Accomplish His PurposesA former mentor of Jill’s, Winnie Tuckness, serves as a regional area coordinator overseeing three Operation Christmas Child area teams.

Growing up in a small, rural Texas town, Kyle Brown never thought he would be in a position to help spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the world.
Yet, serving as a year-round logistics volunteer with Operation Christmas Child has provided Kyle that opportunity as he helps lead White Rock Christian Fellowship to share God’s love with children in need across the globe.
This year, the congregation in Bandera—known as the “cowboy capital of the world”—packed 500 shoebox gifts. Kyle said the ministry project has “strengthened the church body.”
Kyle Brown and his family participate in Operation Christmas Child together. “God is teaching us how to serve together.” Kyle Brown LOGISTICS VOLUNTEER“Operation Christmas Child has changed our church because God is teaching us how to serve together,” he explained. “It’s bringing us closer.”
As a logistics volunteer, Kyle oversees the drop-off collection site at the church. He welcomes and hosts community members who bring in their shoebox donations—the first step in a worldwide journey.
Packing Special GiftsWhite Rock Christian Fellowship members of all ages participated in shoebox packing parties throughout the year. Children and youth helped pack boxes and made special items to include such as sewing kits and fishing kits.
Kyle is grateful that his three children are able to serve God in such a special way.
“They’ll remember for the rest of their lives that God used Operation Christmas Child as an outlet for our family to serve,” he said.
Boxes packed by White Rock are unique in that the congregation packs a lot of boxes for boys ages 10-14, and each one includes tools such as hammers, pliers, screwdrivers, and tape measures.
Growing up, Kyle’s father taught him how to use tools and to work with his hands, but boys in poor communities overseas don’t always have that same opportunity to learn. They may not even grow up with a father in the home.
“These boys need to be able to make a living,” Kyle said. “They need to be able to eat, to work, and to do for themselves.”
Kyle has experienced joy in volunteering with Operation Christmas Child and watching God use his church family to make an eternal difference in the lives of others.
“Operation Christmas Child has been such a blessing to us. It has made my faith deeper seeing how God has provided.”

Sabrina Drewry serves year-round in logistics for Operation Christmas Child as the central drop-off coordinator for Community Bible Church in San Antonio, Texas.
“As the coordinator, my role was to organize and lay out logistically the areas of responsibility and action within the drop-off center,” Sabrina said. Then she recruited volunteers who were responsible for training other volunteers to welcome shoebox donors.
Sabrina felt that watching all of these volunteers work together was like watching the body of Christ in action. “We were all sad when it was over,” Sabrina said. She can’t say enough about why she serves in this role.
As part of her role as a central drop-off coordinator, Sabrina Drewry labels a carton of shoeboxes for transport to a Processing Center. “I love it that people of all ages and abilities can participate in volunteering at a drop-off center.” Sabrina Drewry LOGISTICS VOLUNTEER“I love the integrity of Samaritan’s Purse. I love it that pastors around the world are being given a tool to reach out to children they wouldn’t be able to reach otherwise. That simple gift makes an eternal difference in a child’s life. I love it that people of all ages and abilities can participate in packing a shoebox or volunteering at a drop-off center.”
Sabrina served seven years previously as an Operation Christmas Child project leader for the church. With this being her first year as drop-off center coordinator, Sabrina wondered whether her role would be all administrative in nature. To her surprise, she found it more “ministerial” as she interacted with the volunteers serving at the drop-off center.
“It was my most meaningful experience with Operation Christmas Child to date,” she said.
As Sabrina serves with this Samaritan’s Purse project, she is ministered to in return. “One of the blessings I’ve received is meeting other volunteers and the friendships I’ve formed. I would never have met these people except through Operation Christmas Child. These friendships inspire and encourage me.”

Samaritan's Purse is providing expert medical care to suffering Rohingya children and adults. Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees have streamed into Bangladesh from Myanmar. Our Disaster Assistance Response Team is on the ground to help in Jesus' Name. Share Tweet Pin Emaily SubscribeDiphtheria is spreading among the more than 800,000 Rohingya refugees crammed into Kutupalong camp—one of the largest refugee camps in the world. We opened a Diphtheria Treatment Center in Kutupalong on Dec. 31 and have seen more than 2,000 people, with more than 450 admitted for diphtheria. With proper treatment, people gasping for breath upon admittance can be fully recovered in a day or two.
Our 70-bed center was constructed in just a few weeks and is the only diphtheria center for the southern half of the refugee camp. Most of our patients are children, who are prone to more serious cases of the disease.
