Is Samaritan’s Purse an evangelistic or relief organization?
Samaritan’s Purse is a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization providing both spiritual and physical relief to hurting people around the world. We serve the church worldwide to promote the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Where does Samaritan’s Purse work?Samaritan’s Purse has field offices in 14 countries: Vietnam, Myanmar, Philippines, Cambodia, South Sudan, Kenya, Uganda, Liberia, Niger, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Greece, Iraq, Haiti, and Bolivia. Our ongoing work focuses on water, sanitation, and hygiene; food distribution and nutrition initiatives; livestock and livelihoods training; anti-trafficking programs; maternal and child health; education; and discipleship and evangelism. In addition, Samaritan’s Purse is ready to immediately respond in Jesus’ Name wherever disaster strikes. Our recent international crisis responses include Bangladesh, where we cared for Rohingya refugees with diphtheria, and the Caribbean, where our relief and rebuild efforts continue following hurricanes Irma and Maria. Samaritan’s Purse also responds to natural disasters throughout the United States and, in some cases, follows up with disaster relief rebuild projects. We also have annual construction projects in remote parts of Alaska. Through Operation Christmas Child we are working in more than 100 countries. Operation Christmas Child provides local partners, including churches, with shoeboxes filled with small toys, hygiene items, and school supplies as a means of reaching out to children in their own communities with the Good News of Jesus Christ. We ship these simple gifts outside the United States to children affected by war, poverty, natural disaster, famine, and disease; and to children living on Native American reservations in the U.S. The Greatest Journey discipleship program, developed by Samaritan’s Purse and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, teaches Operation Christmas Child shoebox recipients how to know Christ, grow in their faith, and share this Good News with others. World Medical Mission is the medical arm of Samaritan’s Purse. Every year we send out more than 600 volunteer Christian medical personnel to more than 40 mission hospitals around the world. Our Children’s Heart Project arranges lifesaving operations for children in need from multiple countries, including Mongolia, Uganda, and Bolivia. In Liberia and South Sudan we provide cataracts and cleft lip and palate surgeries. We are also busy at Samaritan Lodge Alaska every year from May—September as we welcome wounded veterans and their spouses for a week of Biblically based marriage enrichment training through Operation Heal Our Patriots. Our aftercare team follows up with couples during the year through events and personal contact.

How does Samaritan’s Purse support local churches overseas and at home?Everywhere we go, we seek to partner with local churches to meet spiritual and physical needs in their communities. As we provide relief in disaster and crisis situations, we come alongside local churches to identify people in desperate need and to mobilize the Body of Christ to serve in Jesus’ Name. For example, after hurricanes Irma and Maria devastated islands in the Caribbean, our teams held emergency relief distributions at local churches and provided generators to churches. In northern Iraq, we are encouraging congregations to stand firm in their faith and to continue sharing the Gospel as we rebuild churches destroyed by ISIS. Samaritan’s Purse helps equip local pastors in Southeast Asia to start small group Bible studies in poor, remote villages. We work with churches in several African countries to offer literacy classes where the Bible is a primary teaching resource. Operation Christmas Child also relies on local churches in more than 100 countries to advance the Gospel through shoebox outreach events and The Greatest Journey. These are just a few examples, scratching the surface of how we partner with local churches.
Does Samaritan’s Purse offer mission trips for churches?Samaritan’s Purse offers volunteer opportunities for both church groups and individuals during disaster relief responses and rebuild projects, primarily but not exclusively in the United States.
How can our children and youth participate in the work of Samaritan’s Purse?It’s easy for children and youth in your church to serve others in Jesus’ Name through the work of Samaritan’s Purse. Children who pack Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes can make an eternal impact in the lives of children across the world. They can participate in shoebox packing parties and fundraise for Operation Christmas Child. Youth ages 13 and up, if accompanied by a chaperone, can also volunteer at an Operation Christmas Child processing center. Youth at least 14 years old, when joined by a parent, can volunteer during Samaritan’s Purse U.S. disaster relief responses. Our teams respond quickly when natural disasters strike and we need an army of volunteers to come alongside hurting homeowners and offer the hope of Jesus Christ.
How much of our gift goes directly to beneficiaries?All contributions designated for specific projects shall be applied to those projects, and we may assess up to 10 percent to be used for administering the gift. Occasionally, we receive more contributions for a given project than can be wisely applied to that project. When that happens, we use these funds to meet a similar pressing need.

Members of your church, whether as individuals or groups, can volunteer on a U.S. disaster relief response and bring compassion and relief to families struggling after a natural disaster. We also could not do this work without our Lighthouse Churches. As a Lighthouse Church, you serve as a home base by housing Samaritan’s Purse volunteers, storing equipment, and helping connect your community with Samaritan’s Purse volunteer opportunities.
Your church can share the Good News of Jesus Christ with children in desperate need by packing Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes, fundraising for Operation Christmas Child, and volunteering at an Operation Christmas Child processing center. We also have seasonal employment opportunities at these processing centers.
Interested in serving internationally? Medical personnel can volunteer through World Medical Mission, and opportunities exist to join a Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART).
